Penland Week Two: All Box All the Time

Penland02

Our class has wrapped up. I have spent much of the two days since I left Penland lying down on the floor. I dreamed of boxes last night. Here is a small sampling of what my box making class accomplished in our second week:

Allison made a box for her collection of. . .

Alison03 Alison02

SHARK TEETH!

Amy’s button box (only one of her many excellent boxes) had partitions and levels.

Betsy made the most complicated box of the bunch:

Edgar specialized in secret compartments:

but also had time for this a joke:

Jamie made a housing for her prints:

And then created these adorable boxes:

Jamie02

each of which has a tiny pencil in a tiny drawer at the back.

Jen made the most enormous box:

And then filled it with some small things:

Larry donated a clamshell box to another course (most generous box maker) and so didn’t quite have time to finish this partitioned box:

But he did complete a number of other boxes, including this slip case.

Sara casually unveiled this box on the last day:

Yeah. It’s a shadow puppet theater.

She also left Penland with this sewing box:

and a clamshell partitioned box for her mokuhanga supplies.

Selene Created an unusual enclosure for three small books of poetry:

And also knocked out this lidded/drawer box:

And together we made this wild set of drawers to donate to the Penland Auction to support work study scholarships.

U-dun-gud. Loved them all but especially the shark’s teeth box and collection. Those critters prove the persistence of life. We find the fossils in certain areas in West Alabama that are exactly the same shapes, kinds, and forms, but darker from age and the fact that they were underground for sixty-five million years.

Thanks, Glenn! I don’t doubt that you are always finding strange things. Bottle diggers come across the most amazing things, surely. See you very soon xoxo
