IT'S TRUE!!Forgive the plug here, but a girl’s gotta make a living. There are a few workshops coming up here in the UK that need a participant or two. I know the holidays are over, and we are all very sad about it. But scientists have recently proved that the best way to cheer up after eating too much, drinking too much, and then going back to work is to make books. It’s true. It’s in Scientific American. I saw it there. NO, DON’T LOOK FOR YOUR COPY, keep reading here.

Below, I’ve listed five Letterpress-printing and Bookbinding courses I’ll be teaching  in January and February in Brighton and in London. For god’s sake, look how happy this woman is. This could be you!

Have you longed to learn more about making books? In this course we will be learning technical skills of bookbinding as well as applying these new skills to book projects. We will begin by focusing on structures that work well for artists, including simple innovative structures, a hard cover book structure, and concertina/accordion books. We will discuss how to use the unique possibilities that books present, sequence and pacing, the use of translucency and layering, and the possibilities inherent in different materials. We’ll talk about the tools and materials necessary for book work as well as tactics for producing editions (identical multiples.) Students are encouraged to bring ideas for projects that we will begin workshopping mid-way through the course. This course includes a small materials fee of £12.Book through Ink Spot Press.

ART ON THE (LETTER)PRESS
***ONLY ONE SPOT LEFT!***
6 Thursday evenings 6:30-9:30, from February 7th to March 14th.
Ink Spot Press, Brighton UK
£275 (plus £12 materials fee)

Letterpress isn’t just about text! For decades, artists have been using these presses to produce beautiful, image-based work. Come and learn art-making letterpress techniques. Together we will cover several of these processes on the Vandercook and Fag presses including linoleum carving and pressure printing. We will work to combine the images we produce with text printed from metal type. The combination of imagery and well-printed text is addictive. Come find out why so many artists choose letterpress as their medium. This course includes a small materials fee of £12 to cover the cost of linoleum and other materials which will be provided. Book through Ink Spot Press by calling 01273 691 496 or emailing them at info@Inkspotpress.co.uk. You can also leave me a message here on the blog.

THE FLAG BOOK
Friday, January 25th, 12 noon to 3pm
London Centre for Book Arts
£58

Learn a fun and unusual binding! The flag book was developed by bookbinding rock star Hedi Kyle. A variation on an accordion (or concertina) structure, the flag book is created by attaching strips of paper to a folded spine. This structure allows for the inclusion of photographs or other papers. A highly kinetic book, the flag book opens with a flourish. It has been adopted by many artists because of the unique opportunities it presents. Join us as we spend a few hours with this structure. book here

THE DRUM LEAF BINDING
January 29th, 12 noon to 3pm
London Centre for Book Arts
£40 plus a £5 materials fee

Due to popular demand, we are running this course a second time! The Drum Leaf is an elegant, hard cover book, and an ideal structure for artists and designers. Because it is assembled by adhering folded sheets of paper, this book can be made directly from prints, drawings, or photographs.

It is easy to learn and does not require specialist tools. In class we will discuss alternate techniques and future projects. Participants in this workshop will bind a book using the Drum Leaf technique and leave with the skills to make them by themselves.

The class is suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners. Book this course here.
